We seek a Full-Time Communication Specialist to join the UTHealth School of Public Health at the Brownsville Regional Campus in Brownsville, TX. In this position, you will work alongside a small media team that serves community engagement projects. This position will focus on the overall marketing of the campus, research, and academic programs. You'll engage in planning, production, and marketing for the regional campus and create social media posts to promote stories and achievements of faculty, staff, and students, as well as community partners and programs. This is an in-office position with some flexibility for Hybrid work on occasion.

Position Summary:

Provides a broad range of communications support to departmental programs including website management, some basic graphic design and content creation for health education communications. Lead local campus marketing efforts and work closely with faculty, staff and students to highlight research and service in Brownsville and the Rio Grande Valley.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Gathers information, generates ideas, and develops and influences the development of high quality, creative materials and programs.

  • Gathers information through research and interviews with community role models, program participants, students, faculty, staff and other appropriate sources, such as community partners.

  • Generates ideas for communication strategies and develops related promotional plans, tactics and materials.

  • Creates content for social media, website and newsletters.

  • Attends community events and programming to identify role models for behavioral journalism efforts.

  • Creates annual reports and infographics as needed.

  • Coordinate press events.

  • Maintain good relations with Houston Media Relations and obtain approval for media content.

  • Collaborates with team members on grant-funded media initiatives and community programming.

  • Other duties as assigned


  • Bilingual in Spanish/English

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or a related field.

Minimum Experience:

  • Three years of experience in public relations, communications, writing/editing or related field.

  • Previous experience in media production (graphic design and or video production).

  • Web Design Experience preferred

Physical Requirements: Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
