Position Summary:

Responsible for overseeing and directing the clinical operations of the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) at Memorial Hermann Healthcare System (MHHS) and Harris Health CRU (LBJ). Coordinates information with the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Clinical Research Unit (MDAC CRU). Responsibilities include contract negotiations, budget development and oversight; program development, evaluation and planning; and supervision of clinical operations.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Develops and oversees financial operations of a study coordinator/nurse service center for CRU investigators encompassing regulatory and study management services for clinical research trials.

  2. Assists with development of initiatives to transform processes within the CRU to enhance the clinical research enterprise.

  3. Directs the activities of the CRU study coordinators/nurse coordinators.

  4. Develops a centralized mechanism for communication and cross-training among the clinical research coordinators and clinical research nurses within the CRU of MHHS, LBJ, LRGV and MDACC.

  5. Designs and maintains a mechanism for using the CRUs as training sites in clinical research for nurses, physicians, investigators, coordinators and UT students.

  6. Serves as consultant to CRU clinical research investigators and coordinators on implementation design, patient safety guidelines and protocol management strategies for new studies.

  7. Directs the activities of the Nurse Managers of the CRUs.

  8. Oversees the design and execution of program improvement plans derived from annual evaluations of the clinical services of the CRU.

  9. Promotes visibility/availability of the CRU clinical and coordinator services throughout the UT System institutions (TRCC) and CCTS affiliations.

  10. Develops and oversees fiscal budget for front office, business, clinical personnel and equipment in the UT and LBJ CRU.

  11. Manages Human Resources activities for direct reports in regards to: recruiting and selection; hiring and termination, training, development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.

  12. Responsible for the design, execution and effectiveness of a system of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded; financial information is reliable and compliant with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

  13. Performs other duties as assigned.


Registered Nurse in the State of Texas.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's degree in Nursing with related Business Certification. Master's degree in Nursing preferred.

Minimum Experience:

Seven (7) years of experience in management and research.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
