Center of Biomedical Semantics & Data Intelligence (BSDI)at theUTHealth Houston School of Biomedical Informatics (SBMI) seeks an exceptional candidate for tenure track or non-tenure track positions at the assistant professor level in artificial intelligence and data science in medicine.
UTHealth is in the world-renowned Texas Medical Center (TMC), located in cosmopolitan Houston, Texas, the fourth largest city in the United States. SBMI currently offers Ph.D. and Masters degrees; it also features certificate programs in biomedical and health informatics.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Plan, coordinate, and direct research in biomedical informatics, data/knowledge management, and big biomedical data analysis, as well as related areas.
Conduct collaborative research within the Center for Biomedical Semantics and Data and other faculty at school, across the university, the Texas Medical Center, and beyond.
Work closely with local and national researchers, physicians, and public health experts and conceive and conduct highly interdisciplinary research projects in biomedical informatics.
Lead research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies, and provide solutions to the challenges of heterogeneity in healthcare knowledge discovery in the big data era, targeting major global health threats, such as drug repurposing, disease risk prediction, mental health, etc.
Develop cutting-edge biomedical informatics technologies for different applications.
Publish original research outcomes in premium peer-reviewed journals and present research efforts at international conferences and workshops.
APPOINTMENTS/BENEFITS:
This position is a full-time, 12-month appointment on the non-tenure track, renewable every year.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Doctoral degree in one of the following areas: computer science, biomedical informatics, mathematics, statistics, or a related discipline.
Experience in machine learning, data mining, and knowledge management, with the capability of transferring them into the medical informatics domain. Given the extremely high-volume and heterogeneity (mix of structured data, natural language, image) of biomedical data, candidate is required to integrate state-of-the-art computational algorithms, including but not limited to natural language processing (NLP), predictive modeling, ontologies, knowledge graph, deep neural network, to build high-throughput pipeline for the automated analysis of clinical and medical data.
Strong algorithmic development and programming skills.
Excellent teamwork and communication skills are required.
A track record of established independent research funding including NIH-funded grants (for the tenure track)
Commitment to excellence in teaching and advising graduate students.
SALARY:
