The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) - Cizik School of Nursing (CSON) invites applicants for full time position at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Nursing Research.

Position Summary:

The Research Assistant Professor is a postdoctoral position committed to conducting a specified program of research supported by research training under the direction and supervision of a senior faculty member. The primary purpose of this role is to develop advanced research skills and competencies, publish scholarly work, develop grants, and learn to develop skills in teaching.

Functioning somewhat independently, the Research Assistant Professor will focus on developing his/her program of research, including disseminating the results of their dissertation and pilot work conducted during the duration of this position. For the first three years in this position, faculty are not eligible for tenure. After three years in this funded position, faculty can apply for transfer to the tenure track.

This position is designed for individuals who have recently been awarded a PhD in nursing or equivalent discipline. It is expected that this faculty member obtains extramural funding within the first three years.

The Research Assistant Professor functions administratively within the Texas Board of Regents, CSON, and UTHealth policies and procedures, maintains the values espoused by the university and school, and promotes excellence in all areas of the mission. This is a full-time faculty appointment.

Position Accountabilities:

  1. Assume primary responsibility for the development of their research career under the mentorship of a senior faculty member.

  2. Must complete and follow a career development plan.

  3. Seeks opportunities to develop advanced research skills through workshops, classes, webinars, etc.

  4. Works with faculty members in their research area on projects to gain further research skills, publications, and presentations.

  5. Functions as a scholar in a research area and disseminates their work in peer-reviewed journals and in presentations at local, regional and national conferences.

  6. Participates in career development workshops and classes, including the postdoctoral training program offered at the University.

  7. Collaboratively secures intramural and extramural funding.

  8. Works with senior faculty to learn teaching strategies – teaching responsibilities = 1 course/year.

  9. Serves on a SON committee.

  10. Attends research seminars offered at the school.

  11. Communicates regularly with mentor.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in nursing or related field

  • Must have graduated within the past two years

  • Familiarity with academic roles, rules, policies, procedures

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

  • Maintains a high level of integrity and ethical practice

  • Demonstrates inclusivity and respect for diversity
