Provides technical assistance in the diagnostic study of cells.

Position Key Accountabilities:
Prepares, stains, and screens specimens in order to complete tests required by various departments within the medical school. Specimens include cellular material from various sites of the human body; sputum, bronchial washings, urine, pleural, and peritoneal fluids.
Performs all tests with care and accuracy to provide correct and informative results to both the pathologist and the department.
Evaluates the cytology specimens by ensuring all patient information is correct and that information on the specimens matches exactly with that on the requisition form to avoid any patient mix-up. Assigns numbers by incumbent to each requisition slip and specimen.
Prepares the specimen for staining by the centrifugation or filtering of fluid specimens and by smearing specimens on slides. Specimen slides are stained, primarily by the papanicolaou stain.
Diagnoses negative slides and refers atypical, inconclusive, or positive cases to the Cytopathologist for further evaluation and the completion of reports.
Enters the diagnosis in the cytology log book, upon receipt of the completed reports, and sends copies of the reports to respective departments.
Works with departments requesting cytologic tests. Receives test requests from and reports tests results to these departments.
Performs other duties as assigned.
American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) certification.
Graduation from an approved school of cytotechnology.
Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
