Position Summary:

Provides and demonstrates technical support for general dental and various school related teaching equipment. Performs highly skilled and specialized mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of dental equipment within the School of Dentistry and remote clinics (offsite clinics and mobile dental clinics).

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Evaluates and recommends new ideas to improve dental equipment quality, safety, and service.

  2. Maintains dental water system including but not limited to:

a. Works with dental water contractor to change filters, log monthly readings and quarterly dental delivery testing

b. Water testing database; prints chain of custody and bottle labels

  1. Maintains dental equipment including but not limited to:

a. Changes nitrous oxide and oxygen cylinders in cylinder room

b. Engraves equipment for asset identification and protection

c. Dental cabinetry

d. Dental chairs and delivery units

e. Countertop sterilizers

f. Other teaching and school related equipment as necessary

  1. Troubleshoots various dental equipment to determine if repairable or need for technician service call for items including but not limited to:

a. Vacuum pump and dental air compressor (external clinics)

b. evaluates SOD building nitrous oxide and delivery systems for proper operation and coordinates service repair visits as needed

c. X-ray equipment

d. Handpieces

  1. Participates in projects such as inspections and installation of new dental equipment. Coordinates technical support visits with vendors and clients, and ensures completion of all equipment service and activities are documented.

  2. Communicates with customers to obtain access to equipment and to resolve equipment issues; with vendors to obtain price quotes for equipment parts; coordinates service call visits and communicates the status of repairs and ensures minimal equipment downtime.

  3. Orders dental equipment parts for dental equipment repairs, keeps track of assigned tools and test equipment, and conducts annual capital asset inventory with Capital Assets Management

  4. Demonstrates knowledge of regulatory guidelines and university policies and procedures that govern equipment support activities. Maintains off-site amalgam separator log and changes amalgam collectors according to EPA guidelines.

  5. Demonstrates and trains dental and dental hygiene students in the use of dental equipment.

  6. Manages Human Resources activities of department in regards to: recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.

  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.

Effective Knowledge of basic computer software use.

Knowledge of basic hand tool and mechanical equipment use.

Minimum Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum Experience:

Three years of experience in the repair and maintenance of plumbing, electrical, and mechanical equipment. Prior dental equipment experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
