UTHealth Houston Neurosciences is hiring for a Nurse Practitioner to join their team of professionals. The NP will be responsible for: seeing all the neurosurgical consults that come to the hospital; answering phone calls for the service line; assisting the team with the initial evaluation and assessment of the neurotrauma patients in the ED or as direct admits to either the ICU, IMU, or floor; and more. This is a great opportunity to be trained in: performing lumbar punctures, lumbar drains, craniotomy for insertion of ICP bolt monitor and/or ventricular catheters, scalp wound closures, and removal of drains; and consenting patients for procedures and speaking to families about the patient’s condition. The schedule is Monday-Friday with no nights, holidays or weekends. The hours are rotating between 5:30am-1:30pm and 10am-6:00pm (but can be solely 5:30am-1:30pm if preferred).

UTHealth Neurosciences houses one of the largest and busiest Neuro Trauma Programs in the country at Memorial Hermann TMC.With the most experienced neurointensivists and advanced practice providers (APP), our critical careteam provides unparalleled care for the sickest patients in our region. The NSICU is a growing 38 bed ICU with 12 Intermediate Care beds that specializes in providing critical care to patients with traumatic brain injuries, strokes, brain tumors and other acute neurological and neurosurgical diseases. The academic teaching service includes faculty, APPs, fellows, residents, and medical students at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.
Our large referral base ensures a consistently high volume of critically ill patients. Our multidisciplinary approach helps promote team learning, group dynamics and excellent patient care. We focus on monitoring the neurological status of our patients, detecting cues of neurological decline, early intervention, and state of the art NSICU management.

Provides advanced nursing care to patients with complex acute, critical, and/or chronic health conditions in a clinic or hospital setting in one or more specialized areas under the direction of a physician.
Position Key Accountabilities:
Conducts complex, standardized patient care procedures which require experience and specialized training which would otherwise be performed by a physician, but which do not constitute the practice of medicine.
Conducts independent and physician supervised rounding on unit.
Performs relevant patient evaluations and assessments, and provides appropriate treatment; including monitoring and ordering medications.
Coordinates, directs, and implements the patient’s plan of care.
Assists in collecting patient histories, screens for co-morbidities, and provides guidance and preventative health care as needed.
Performs physical examinations and provides episodic care, or problem-oriented care, under the supervision of a physician.
Orders appropriate laboratory, diagnostic and radiographic tests, and interprets results.
Monitors the treatment program of the patient to inform the attending physician of pertinent medical information.
Facilitates patient education relating to medical processes, medication, nutrition, and health promotion or preventative health care.
Assists physicians in formulating therapeutic decisions.
Maintains appropriate records, and prepares charts for review and counter signature by physician.
Prepares and cares for supplies and equipment.
Responds to emergency situations.
Performs within the scope of practice prescribed by licensure and certification.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Current Texas Licensure as a Registered Nurse
Current Texas Licensure as an APRN-NP
Current specialty certification as required by department, excluding FNP certification unless paired with a post master’s certification in specialty.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certified or specialty certification as required by department.
Masters in Nursing as NP or Masters in Nursing with completion of a post-masters Nurse Practitioner Certification Program.
None; previous experience in area of clinical focus preferred.
Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
