Position Summary:

We are in search of an Ophthalmic Assistant II to join our Ophthalmology Clinic as part of UTHealth Neurosciences. Each OA is responsible for the assisting physicians providing patient care by preparing patients for examination and diagnostic testing, adhering to UTHN assigned metrics, and upholding the core values of our team. Our group has a passion for creating positive patient interactions and we are seeking a team member that is dedicated to caring for the well-being of others. This opportunity will also allow for continued growth and development within a multispecialty, comprehensive neurosciences clinic.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for preparing exam rooms for patients. Maintains instruments and equipment.

  • Prepares patients for physician’s exam. Performs testing based on patient needs and physician preference.

  • Assists in organizing and planning of patient care and follow-up, including major/minor procedures and diagnostic testing. Assists Ophthalmologist with surgical procedures as necessary.

  • Maintains operating room according to sterile technique, scrubbing, gowning and gloving procedures.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Current Ophthalmic Assistant Certification (COA, COT, or COMT) OR

  • CPR Certification is required

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Minimum Experience:

  • Two (2) years of clinical experience in Ophthalmology. Completion of an accredited program in Ophthalmology may substitute for the experience requirement. May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

Physical Requirements:

  • Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
