Position Summary:

We are looking for a Senior Technology License Associate to work in our office of Technology Management. This employee identifies, evaluates, and commercializes the technologies developed with the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. In essence the role is to work with faculty to identify and commercialize discoveries at UTHealth. The candidate will work with patent manager and outside patent counsel to determine if the discoveries have the potential to be patented, and how best to commercialize them.

Candidates who have a background in the life sciences field will be the most successful. We require candidates have doctoral degrees and some experience in negotiating commercial contracts. You must also have at least four years of related experience in commercializing technology in industry or university technology transfer.

This area of UTHealth runs very much like a business unit. Candidates must understand the patent process, and how to partner with licensing entities as well as companies who support medical advancements. You will be working side by side with our research faculty and have to understand their work.

This is a full time position which is eligible for all benefits from UTHealth including excellent healthcare coverage as well as a pension administered by the State of Texas. You will office in the Texas Medical Center.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Evaluates new inventions for product and market potential.

  2. Conducts licensing strategies and conducts negotiations with potential licensees.

  3. Oversees the administration of complex active license and related research agreements.

  4. Provides support in the general maintenance of the patent portfolio including working closely with investigators to solicit invention disclosures.

  5. Initiates and works with Legal Affairs, when necessary, and OTM regarding negotiations for licensing/option agreements or other related contracts.

  6. Delivers educational seminars to UTHealth faculty on patenting/licensing rules and procedures.

  7. Manages Human Resources activities, either directly or through direct communication to supervisor, for direct reports in regards to: recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.

  8. Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge of licensing practices required. Intellectual Property law knowledge preferred. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.

Minimum Education:

Doctorate’s degree in one of the life sciences or law.

Minimum Experience:

Four (4) years of related experience in commercializing technology in industry or university technology transfer.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
