Position Summary:

UTHealth is looking for a Systems Administrator to be a part of the Database & Application Support team within DCO. This team focuses on clinical, enterprise, and departmental level application systems design, implementation and support. Primary responsibilities include server and database administration, web, SharePoint administration, applications systems and support, systems integration and automation, business intelligence, as well as working closely with the application owners to help with performance tuning, troubleshooting installations and upgrades.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) is the most comprehensive academic health center in the UT System. Data Center Operations (DCO) under the direction of the Infrastructure Team at UTHEALTH, operates the university’s primary data centers at UCT and Guhn Rd. DCO also administers standards for multiple data centers that are a part of the UTHealth campus. DCO is comprised of three main areas: Infrastructure & Virtualization, Database & Application Support, and Datacenter & Operational Support.

This is a full time role that is classified as exempt. It is eligible for all UTHealth benefits including healthcare coverage and participation in a retirement plan administered by the State of Texas. You will work in the University Center Tower which is in the heart of the Texas Medical Center. UTHealth System Administrators support a variety of mission critical and 24x7 patient care focused systems that are required to be readily available. In order to support these systems, there are times scheduled and non-scheduled after-hours work is required. There is also an on-call rotation that has been scheduled, months in advance, to help triage issues after-hours and on holidays.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Utilizes appropriate procedures and processes necessary to ensure the safety and integrity of organizational servers, data systems, file structures, computer operating systems and computer system software.

  2. Installs, maintains, configures, and upgrades UNIX operating systems to improve the reliability, safety and performance of the system.

  3. Works with Network Security Analyst to ensure security and integrity of computer operating systems and supporting software by detecting hackers and ensuring remote access is encrypted.

  4. Ensures data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations in conjunction with the Disaster Recovery & Security Analyst.

  5. Performs basic and intermediate level shell and kernel programming and testing.

  6. Conducts studies of projected enhancements in hardware and software and presents recommendations to management.

  7. Conducts performance measurement and evaluation of the servers to ensure Service Level Agreements (SLA) are met.

  8. Implements security and the disaster recovery according to established standards policy and guidelines.

  9. Participates in all phases of total system planning and in the generation of justifications and specifications for facility requirements and enhancements.

  10. Implements system software projects.

  11. Presents technical briefings.

  12. Performs other duties as assigned.


Ability to configure and administer diverse servers and computer operating systems. Familiar with WEB technology, database concepts and networking.

Server Administration: Windows Server 2012+, includes installation, configuration, security and troubleshooting on-prem physical servers and virtual servers along with AWS/Azure cloud servers.

Client/Server Application support: Backend systems support for client-server applications. Understanding of web technologies such as IIS and Apache as well as CMS suites such as Word Press, Umbraco, Moodle, etc. Understanding of SSL certificate implementation.

Database Administration: Migrations, Backup/Restore, daily admin/monitoring, SQL installation, clustering using FCI and Availability Groups, HADR, performance tuning, disk-subsystems knowledge in relation to database performance for Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and MySQL environments.

Preferred Sills Include:

Experience with systems and database cloud support (AWS, Azure): including EC2, RDS, FSX and DynamoDB exposure.

SCCM knowledge and experience: Basic understanding and client troubleshooting.

SharePoint Administration: both On-Prem and SharePoint Online

Scripting/Programming Technologies: Powershell, .NET, Java, AWS CloudFormation

Knowledge of clinical systems such as EPIC, AllScripts, CPS, Axium and EClinical Works.

Knowledge of monitoring tools such as Idera SQL Diagnostic Manager and Monyog for MySQL as well as SolarWinds – Server and App Monitor would be a plus.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree, training in information technology or related experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

At least One (1) year of experience in information technology support and systems administration in diverse environments. Preferred experience with the network and server hardware, software and security tools that UTHSC-H has deployed in its information technology infrastructure.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
