UTHealth Houston is looking for a University Communication Specialist who will focus on Information Technology (IT) across our system of schools and clinics. Responsibilities will include writing technology-related announcements, promoting new technology tools, creating professional reports, and other IT-focused communications. Success for this position involves taking highly technical information and translating it for a general audience. We need someone who can follow the intricacies of technology, and then write for a mass audience with clarity.
Applicants must have strong writing and editing skills, and at least three years of experience in the communications field. Role to include internal communications to staff, interdepartmental messages, and high-level reports showcasing UTHealth Houston’s innovation in the IT field. You will join a team of communication professionals in our Office of Public Affairs, and will work closely with our IT department to serve its communication needs.
This person’s passion should be for the technical world of information technology. The position requires a high level of critical thinking and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
This is a fulltime position that is classified as salaried and exempt. Your office will be located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center, and candidates will ideally manage a hybrid schedule of working from home while still coming to the University Center Tower or campus to meet and network with our Information Technology team. You will be eligible for all UTHealth benefits including healthcare coverage and participation in a pension plan administered by the State of Texas.
Position Key Accountabilities:
Responsible for overall projects as assigned.
Gathers information, generates ideas, develops and influences the development of high quality, creative communications, materials, and programs.
Gathers information through research and interviews with faculty, staff, students, and clinical practice, and other appropriate sources, such as donors and patients.
Generates ideas for communication strategies and develops related promotional plans, tactics, and materials; prepares reports and metrics.
Supports content development of various communication vehicles: print brochures, internal communications, website management and/or publications, and social media channels.
Writes news/feature articles for publication.
Supports internal communications campaigns.
Collaborates with team members and/or other faculty/staff.
Other duties as assigned.
This role has a minimum requirement of three years of experience in public relations, communications, writing/editing or related field.
A writing sample will be required along with your application. To attach a writing sample to the application you will upload it as a document the same way you upload your resume to the system. Even if you have a link to your writing portfolio it is desirable to attach a couple of examples of your work to the application.
Additional Skills include:
Written and verbal communication skills.
Feature writing and news writing skills.
Knowledge and experience in website content management systems.
Strong knowledge of AP Style.
Proficient in Microsoft Office products and platforms.
Experience in Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
Experience in photography and graphic design for web preferred.
Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related field or relevant experience in lieu of education.
Three (3) years of experience in public relations, communications, writing/editing or related field.
Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
